Tamworth Toastmasters Club was formed in 1966. The first meeting was held in May. The charter was approved in September and the charter meeting held in November. Meeting Venues & Frequency The Club originally met weekly and its home for many years was the Tamworth RSL. Renovations involving the room used for meetings forced Toastmasters to meet in other club rooms and ultimately to other venues entirely. The Club changed to twice monthly meetings in the late '70s and has stayed that way ever since. After leaving the RSL, the Club met at a variety of venues until settling on McCarthy School, the Club's key partner in the Youth Leadership program. McCarthy has been the Club's meeting venue since the early to mid 1980s. Presidents The Club's first President was Roger Jones, then Chief Health Inspector of Parry Shire Council. Roger unfortunately passed away in late 2005. Including 2007/08, Tamworth Toastmasters has had 51 Presidents (some served more than once), 10 female and 41 male. Until the mid '70s, Toastmasters was a male-only organisation. Click here for a list of Club Presidents since inception. The early days Word has it that local chiropracter the late Len Welsh brought the idea of Toastmasters to Tamworth. Local media man Mike Moroney is reputed to have called the first meeting (a demonstration meeting?) at the then Tamworth & District Workmens Club. Although it began in America in 1924, Toastmasters had only come to Australia 10 years before the formation of the Tamworth Club. Wollongong was the first to be formed in Australia in 1956.
